An Elaboration on my Comment

Last night, very late last night I read a post on St. Joseph the Worker’s Revolution FB Page and just had to comment on it.  Here is the quote:

“To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women.” – Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

Here is my response:

As Beautiful as this quote seems on the surface, I do not fully agree with it. Here’s why…

I grew up in a Culture where it was commonplace to repeat a saying over and over…”El hombre llega hasta donde la mujer quiere.” Meaning, The man will go as far as a woman allows.

Now, I KNOW that these two items are different, and yet they both have a HUGE similarity.

Cannot a MAN, who is also capable of thinking, who also possesses a Brain, a Heart, a Conscience, a Mind, can he not be GOOD?
Can he not be BETTER just because he CAN?
Cannot a Man be a Good Man for the sake of being a True Man?

I am aware of the saying that Behind a Good Man there is an even Better Woman 😉
But why must all the responsibility lie on a woman?
Why MUST the woman always be the one to possess the virtues of Truth, Justice, Goodness, Fidelity?
Why don’t Men hold themselves to these standards because they TOO are Creatures of God?

A Professor of mine once told all the Males in our class, “You should be Insulted when people say, ‘It’s because he’s a guy’ or ‘You know how men are.'”
And I AGREE with her!
As Men, you should be INSULTED that Society does not hold you to a higher standard…does not see you CAPABLE of being Responsible, Honest, Good, Just, Faithful!

I know that Women are the Heart, I know that Women are always seen as just having that Virtuous Nature…And for the most part, Women do.

I also see that the quote by his Eminence further tries to compliment women by stating that History could be written in terms of the level of its women…But the fact of the Matter is that women have for the most part been Oppressed and seen as Second Class Citizens. So no matter how Virtuous the Woman, the Men could “take” them regardless. Those that won them over with their “Worthiness,” did not have to carry that “Worth” anywhere other than before her.

LOL! I hope this makes at least a BIT of sense, it is late. If my ramblings are too incomprehensible, I will gladly clarify them. =o)

Now there are just a few things that I would like to add…

If you look back on our History, it is not the most Glorious.  Human history is ridden with War, Famine, Destruction, Selfishness, Greed, and many other not so great qualities.  I know it is not all bad, but what I am addressing is the latter part of the quote, “The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women.”  Along with the very first sentence, ” To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood.”

Take our history along with the quotes, what does that leave you with?  HORRIBLE WOMEN!  What virtue?  What goodness?  What justice?

So I ask again, how is this a compliment for Women?

Here’s a quote that I will leave you with, although a bit of a backhanded compliment, it is HILARIOUS!!  And true??

A woman can say more in a sigh than a man can say in a sermon.
