What a way to start…on the day after the Archdiocese of Los Angeles gets its new Coadjutor. He will soon to take Cardinal Roger Mahoney’s place…the first Hispanic Cleric, his grace, el Arzobispo José H. Gomez.
Cardinal Mahoney has always been the Mexican Immigrant’s ally, our friend. From the start of his priesthood, he chose to go to Fresno instead of staying in Los Angeles so that he would be closer to the Migrant Workers. He not only befriended Cesar Chavez, he is known to have walked alongside him. Cardinal Mahoney has always supported Immigrant Rights and now we must thank him even further for urging our Holy Father to appoint a Hispanic to succeed him.
The Los Angeles Archdiocese is the largest Catholic Archdiocese in the US, with over 70% of its members being of Hispanic origin.
So what does this mean for us? It means that the world, i.e. the US, will now have to take notice and accept Mexicans and all Latinos, all Spanish-speaking Catholics, as human beings! What a thought!
The Church has shown by this appointment that it supports us and our rights. Our Mother Church is Proud of its Diversity. Our Mother Church is not afraid nor has it ever veered from its position of helping the oppressed, the voiceless, the marginalized, no matter how unpopular.
As a Mexican-American, I feel hope for the future. The future for Immigrants in the US and hope for the Church. It will not be an easy path…nothing worthwhile ever is. As a wise person said, “We were put on this earth to suffer, to grow and learn, just take a look at the Old Testament…our Happiness, our Joy, our Destiny is beside our Heavenly Father and there we will rejoice for all Eternity.”
Bienvenido, nuestro muy estimado, and long overdue, Arzobispo José H. Gomez. You have entrusted this new ministry to Our Lady of Guadalupe and we also pray that she, along with the Holy Spirit, Guide you, Enlighten you and Protect you…
