I am sharing this moving story with you to illustrate a truth: the moral force provided by ordinary men and women can indeed become an extraordinary source of strength even in the worst of circumstances. This woman fulfilled the Great Commandment against all odds, especially the second part of the commandment. In a hell of man’s making, an extermination camp, a death camp, Stanislawa was faithful to the Lord of life who bids us by His own example of simplicity of life, of poverty of spirit and humility of heart to love without measure. “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you” (Jn. 15: 13-14). This then is the Christ that we preach, Christ Crucified. He is our creed, our way, our life and our hope.
